Job Description OTR Driving / Hiring Procedure
The duties required to perform operation have been thoroughly evaluated and are described in this section of the company’s policy handbook. Employees are expected to be physically capable of performing duties safely and properly, while following operational protocols.
Each new employee is required to undergo a DOT physical followed by an orthopaedic screening to determine health status and physical performance. The findings will then be given to the hiring personnel of Laufer Trucking for determination of employment. Employment is not guaranteed and might not be offered if the candidate is found to be unfit to perform stated job duties.
Position of driver for Laufer Trucking requires over-the-road driving of truck loads. Drivers are commissioned to operate their vehicle with some maintenance on the road, as well as using equipment and hooking up of the trailers. This does involve the use of machinery and tools for the securing of tarps and items being transported. Physical activity is variable, with bouts of intense work ranging from 1 – 2 + hours per day.
Employees are expected to be able to sustain repetitive movements of the arms, above shoulder level, for 5 minutes while operating tools weighing 20 lbs. They should have grip strength of 45 lbf., measured with a digital dynamometer. Employees must be able to safely lift tarps of 25 – 100 lbs., 20” from ground to a minimum of 54” in height for 5 consecutive repetitions, pull / push 50 lbs. at 20” / 54” / 80” from ground level. They must show proper back and abdominal strength and lower extremity range of motion to support such lifting. Employees must also be capable of completing a step-up test of 10 repetitions in 15 seconds at a height of 20”.
Candidates for employment will undergo their DOT physical by the provider of Laufer Trucking’s choice, but will be referred to Blount Orthopaedic for the orthopaedic screenings. Information will then be released back to Laufer Trucking for review, with all fees for the orthopaedic screening paid by Laufer Trucking. If appropriate, a job offer will be made to the candidate within a two week timeframe. Laufer Trucking reserves the right to not offer employment if the candidate fails to meet the minimum physical requirements for performing the described duties.
